Contaminated Land Environmental Auditing
SAGE can provide Contaminated Land Site Auditor services in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria. Amanda Lee was appointed as a NSW EPA Site Auditor in 2015 and was appointed by mutual recognition by the Victorian EPA in 2016, the NT EPA in 2022, and the Queensland Department of Environment and Science in 2022.
Case Studies
Amanda is currently appointed as the Auditor for the Melbourne and Launceston Airport as part of the Commonwealth Government’s PFAS Airports Investigation Program (the Program). The Melbourne Airport is subject to a Victorian EPA s208 risk of harm Audit.
The Audits involve considerations of the Program’s Investigation framework and national standards with respect to the detailed site investigations, human health and ecological risk assessments and hydrogeological studies being conducted at both Melbourne and Launceston.
Amanda and her support team are utilising years of technical experience within the PFAS investigation, risk assessment and remedial space to ensure that the work is robust, justified and fit for purpose. Amanda and her team have identified project risks early and have delivered all document reviews in a timely manner. The duration of the program is expected to extend into 2027.
Amanda is the appointed New South Wales Site Auditor under the Contaminated Land Management Act (1997) at the Commonwealth owned (Department of Finance) IWC which was Sydney’s only waste liquid receiving facility from early 1970’s until 1980’s. Braiya is currently supporting as an Auditor Assistant for the project.
The site is currently being monitored with a number of remedial and risk management actions are being considered and implemented. A complexity of this site is that the engineering design of the landfill was not accurately documented or understood. Establishing a conceptual site model has been critical for informing any actions and approaches.
The Audit is ongoing and has involved careful consideration and a balance of economic versus environmental outcomes, as the site will remain a closed landfill with no future plans for redevelopment or alternate land uses. The Commonwealth, through the Department of Finance, will continue to own and have responsibility for the management and monitoring of the site. Amanda has a critical role is ensuring the site and its contaminants are best understood and that the risk management solutions achieve the objectives that align with Commonwealth and NSW EPA expectations. Expertise in contaminated sites and strong stakeholder communications are key skills.
